The Government of the Republic of Korea and the WIPO Academy share a common vision to promote the benefits of the intellectual property (IP) system for sustainable development through high-quality IP education and training programs organized with partners across the world.

Since 2011, they have collaborated on capacity-building activities for the benefit of developing countries, least-developed countries and countries in transition, through the Korea Funds-In-Trust for Education. The Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) has contributed over 2.6 million CHF to these funds to date.

WIPO, KIPO, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the Republic of Korea (MCST) and the Korea Development Institute School of Public Policy and Management (KDIS) offer a Joint Master’s Degree program focusing on IP and Development Policy – the WIPO Academy’s only higher education program focusing specifically on IP and development policy.

The funds support training for government officials, particularly IP examiners, through the Academy’s Professional Development Program. The scope of training is continuously expanding, ranging from patents and trademarks to industrial designs and IP dispute settlement.

Blended learning

The funds support specialized blended on-offline training courses, such as the Advanced International Certificate Course (AICC) for business professionals, the IP Impact Certificate Course (IPCC) for teachers and educators, and training for outstanding women scientists, including the winners of the "L’Oréal-UNESCO “For Women in Science Programme".

Summer school

The WIPO-Korea Summer School offers selected young professionals and students an intensive two-week program in IP. The Summer School has been organized annually since 2008 and experts from the public and private sector provide interactive training on various aspects of IP, such as patents, trademarks, copyright and the relationship between IP and other policy areas such as health and climate change.

In 2018, the Funds-in-Trust responded to a request from the IP Office of the Philippines to help its staff prepare for the Philippines’ role as an International Searching Authority and International Preliminary Examination Authority. Thus demonstrating the Fund’s capacity to respond to the specific needs of individual WIPO member states by providing customized IP training programs delivered in-country.
